A prominent Chinese pastor has been arrested charged with ‘inciting subversion of state power’. Like many other Christians before him, Pastor Wang Yi is now seen, in effect, as an enemy of the state.
Pastor Wang Li of the Early Rain Covenant Church in Chendu, in the southwest, was arrested on December 9 along with more than 100 members of his congregation.
The 45 yr-old pastor was named as one of the top 50 leading public intellectuals in China before his conversion to Christianity in 2005.
His arrest is part of a growing clampdown on unregistered house churches in China. Increasingly, the authorities are targeting larger, higher profile congregations. A Release partner says they are emboldened by the silence from the West.
