Be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints. Pray also for me, that whenever I open my mouth, words may be given me so that I will fearlessly make known the mystery of the gospel, for which I am an ambassador in chains. Pray that I may declare it fearlessly as I should.
Ephesians 6: 18-20
Meet Pastor Wang Yi. He is the influential leader of Early Rain Covenant Church in Chengdu, China. In December 2018 he was arrested along with his wife and more than 100 members of his church. He was eventually charged with ‘inciting subversion of state power’ and sentenced to 9 years in prison.
Before the government crackdown his church was very active in mission and evangelism and Pastor Wang Yi has been a prominent campaigner for greater religious freedom in China.
Look at the picture of Pastor Wang Yi. Notice his handcuffs. Imagine what it would be like to lose your freedom – to be chained as a criminal because of your obedience to Jesus. John Cao, another Christian currently imprisoned in China, wrote these words, ‘You can take away my freedom, but you can’t take away my prayers. My prayers have wings and leap over the iron mesh high wall. Many brothers and sisters have heard them.’
