Fundraising idea hatched after
Nightingale review
A simple request to write a book review of Song of the Nightingale, Helen
Berhane’s moving account of her time in prison in Eritrea, was just the start
of a journey helping persecuted Christians for Release International volunteer
Moira.
‘I was shocked by what I read, which started me on my own journey to becoming
a church representative for Release International,’ she said. ‘I realised the
importance of getting the message out about the persecution of Christians around
the world.’
Wanting to engage further, Moira set up a small baking stall at her church in
Paisley to raise funds to help persecuted believers. ‘Prayers are a powerful force,
but money is also needed,’ she said.
‘I joined the community group which allowed me to have a team helping to put
together an annual sale for Release International, which now takes place on Palm
Sunday. We sell a wide variety of items from home-bakes to knitted chickens!’
This year’s Easter sale proved the most successful to date with a total raised of
more than £300.
Our thanks to Moira for all her hard work raising not only much-needed funds
to help our persecuted family practically but also highlighting the issue of
Christian persecution with those around her.

Challenge yourself
and help the
persecuted!
If you enjoy walking, trekking or
running, why not take part in one
of the Ultra Challenge® series of
treks and runs while at the same
time raising sponsorship for Release
International’s work.
You may be a walker and new to
endurance events, a seasoned
trekker, or perhaps a marathon
runner looking to up the distance but
whatever your pace, experience or
age there are many fantastic events
to choose from of varying distances
from 10km to 100km. You will be
fully supported along the way and
can take part as an individual or with
others as a team.
Whether it’s setting out in
stunning coastal scenery, along a
historic towpath or along trails in
England’s wonderful countryside,
your challenge will test you on an
unforgettable journey. Most will walk
at a pace that suits them, many will
jog parts and some will run the whole
course!
‘I would thoroughly recommend taking
on one of these challenges,’ said Paul
Robinson, Release International CEO.
‘It’s a great way to test yourself, make
new friends while all the time raising
funds to help our persecuted family.’
