“Brother, I have come to arrest you.”
Book launch tour with Dr Berhane Asmelash
One morning, I failed to turn up for the customary Communist shout-in. As a nursing assistant in the hospital, I had to go in early to relieve the night shift. And a local police officer was despatched to the hospital to arrest me. I knew him well. Gutama was a new convert to Christianity, who came to my house for discipleship studies. He was slim, in his 30s and usually happy. “Brother, I have come to arrest you,” he said. I thought my policeman friend was joking, but his face told me otherwise.

Dr Berhane was previously jailed for his faith. Brother, I have come to arrest you tells the story of his conviction, courage and service. You can purchase a copy here. Today, he works tirelessly to serve Christians in Eritrea who face the constant threat of arrest and imprisonment in brutal conditions. Some, like Dr Kiflu, have now been incarcerated for 20 years.
In her commendation of Berhane’s book, Fiona Bruce MP and Vice Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group for International Freedom of Religion or Belief, writes,
‘This book needed to be written – and needs to be read. The world should know of the suffering and bravery of thousands of Eritreans, barbarically imprisoned, tortured, and killed – simply on account of their beliefs… May this book compel all who read it to action.’
