In his seminal book, Tortured for Christ, Richard Wurmbrand wrote:
‘I tremble because of the sufferings of those persecuted in different lands. I tremble thinking about the eternal destiny of their torturers. I tremble for Western Christians who don’t help their persecuted brethren… The West sleeps and must be awakened to see the plight of the captive nations.’
Consciousness was awakened. And in the UK and Northern Ireland, what began as Christian Mission to the Communist World grew into Release International.
Today, Release is supporting Christians under pressure in some 30 nations around the world, under communism, in authoritarian states, and facing persecution from militant Islamists, Hindus and Buddhists.
The need has never been greater.
But it all began with the atheist Jew who encountered Jesus and became a Christian pastor in Romania. Richard Wurmbrand’s life was so radically transformed that he endured years of torture, rather than renounce his faith.
His many books have challenged and impacted thousands of lives.
Now his own life has been turned into a feature film for Christians to show in their churches and inspire another generation to continue his work of compassion.
Shot entirely in Romania, Tortured for Christ has been filmed by Release’s sister organisation, Voice of the Martyrs USA.
